IS THIS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AUSSIE WINE IN A BOX?(BUT IT'S SERIOUSLY GOOD!)
Bring on the box! This winter, you can enjoy an exceptional glass of fine wine, anytime you like without worrying it will go off.
A new business called UnBottled offers top quality wine in a box - yes, a box - for around $80 for two litres. But it is seriously good!
“We love great food and wine. With younger kids at home, it’s hard to get out as much as when we were child-free; so these days, we mainly fine dine at home. But with that, came the pain of tipping out half-drunk bottles down the sink’, co-founder Mike Banks said.
Recognising there are many reasons people might only want one glass of wine tonight; moderating consumption for your health, living alone, or have a partner who drinks differently; Mike and Ann Marie researched their options.
They realised the box makes an excellent choice for both portion control and preservation.
“Unfortunately there’s been a pervasive mis-belief in Australia that boxed wines are bad. But it’s not the box that’s bad, it’s the wines that have historically gone into the box,” Mike says.
“If seriously good wine goes in, then seriously good wine comes out. So we’re putting ... (5 Star Winery) wines into our boxes,” Ann Marie, a trained sommelier said.
“Australian’s love the idea of drinking great wine at home, but often don’t know where to start, so we’re making it easy for them, by curating a small quarterly selection of limited release boxed wines from acclaimed Australian winemakers.”
UnBottled ships their boxed wines at the start of each season and incorporate a little dose of wine education for the those who wish to meet the winemaker and learn more about the wines they are enjoying.
Each season, they travel to a new Australian region and showcase four wines from an acclaimed winemaker.
Their Winter Release features wines from McLaren Vale’s Brash Higgins and are wines selected to pair particularly well with winter fare like winter stews, roasts and tangines.
The box is a clever technology that reduces oxidation and keeps wine-fresh up to 40 days once opened.
“This may be the most expensive wine ever boxed; but it’s ready to enjoy today – and we believe there are others out there like us who want to do better for the environment and enjoy a great glass of wine’.
At $85 a 2L box, it could be considered dear by many; but the two believe that those who know and enjoy really good wine; will be willing to trade off the bottle for the benefits of the box
