STUDENTS TURN TO SMART SHOPPING AS BACK-TO-SCHOOL COSTS SOAR

With rising prices straining household budgets, students across Australia are turning to smart shopping strategies to make their back-to-school dollar stretch further.

A University of Melbourne study has revealed that nearly half (46%) of university students now rely on overdrafts to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, research by Roy Morgan shows Australians are set to spend big on back-to-school essentials, with 5.1 million adults expected to fork out an average of $525 each—an increase from $512 in 2024.

For university students like Kiara Basset from Sydney (pictured) keeping costs down is more than just a preference—it’s a necessity.

Kiara, a University of Notre Dame student, has learned to shop strategically, turning to online retailers like Temu to ease the financial burden while ensuring she has everything she needs for her studies.

“I can get my supplies without breaking the bank and still have money left for other expenses like socialising and going out with friends,” Kiara says.

“Normally, a pencil case would be double or triple the price, but Temu has great options for a fraction of the cost. Many items are unique—like transparent sticky notes—things I haven’t seen before in stores.”

Stretching every dollar

With university fees, rent, and daily living expenses adding up, many students juggle part-time jobs while studying. Smart shopping has become vital in managing finances, and platforms like Temu offer affordable options without sacrificing quality.

Kiara has made a habit of getting creative with her back-to-school shopping. “I got some quirky stationery that makes taking notes almost fun and a pencil case with so much storage it could double as a stationery shop,” she jokes.

For those looking to stock up in time for the school year, Temu offers products with a ‘Local Warehouse’ tag, meaning they can be delivered in as fast as 1-2 business days—saving both time and money.
