Outdoor enthusiasts who love venturing off the beaten track can now explore with extra peace of mind, thanks to the Australian launch of HMD OffGrid, a new satellite-powered device offering 24/7 search and rescue capabilities and real-time location tracking.

With more than 15 million camping and caravan trips taken in Australia last year and roughly 130 bushwalkers needing rescue annually, demand for reliable off-grid connectivity is growing.

Enter HMD OffGrid, a pocket-sized device that connects adventurers even in the most remote locations.

Developed by Human Mobile Devices (HMD), OffGrid operates using ultra-reliable L Band satellite radio spectrum, ensuring connectivity where traditional mobile networks fail.

The device, which weighs just 60g, pairs with the OffGrid app to enable two-way messaging, location tracking for up to five people, and a ‘check-in’ button for instant updates to family and friends.

Priced at $329 and available via Amazon, OffGrid is built for durability, boasting a three-day battery life and military-grade toughness. It also includes Overwatch x Rescue, a premium SOS service offering round-the-clock emergency response and fully funded assistance for those exploring beyond traditional mobile coverage.

HMD Co-founder and CEO Jean-Francis Baril said the launch reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation and human connection without compromising the ability to unplug from everyday life.

“HMD OffGrid is a new, affordable, and easy-to-use offering that’s both empowering and reliable—especially when it matters most,” Mr Baril said.

“Whether you’re hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, OffGrid ensures you’re never truly off grid.”

For those heading into the great outdoors this year, OffGrid offers flexible subscription plans, starting at $24.99 per month for unlimited messaging and SOS services.

With adventure travel on the rise, HMD OffGrid provides a simple and effective way to stay safe while embracing the wild.
